Camp Details

Camp Dates: 12th to 16th August 2024 (attendance for all 5 days is required)

Camp Times: 9am – 12pm or available as a full day (9am – 3pm) in combination with Debate!

Camp Ages: Suitable for boys and girls aged 7-11

Camp Location: Hujjat Primary, Brookshill, Harrow, HA3 6RR

Showcase: Friday 16th August – all parents/carers and families will be invited to attend for a live Exhibition (time TBC)

Segregation Arrangements: Suitable for boys and girls aged 7-11. Segregation of genders will be accommodated where possible, including lunch and break times, adult supervision will be present at all times.

Course Syllabus:

Wrapped with the Camp ONEder’s God-Centric banner, our budding artists will remember Allah (SWT) through their artwork and also engage in key Islamic Concepts such as setting a Niyyah for each session, Dhikr of Allah (SWT) through His Names, Shukhr and more. 

  • Introduction to Islamic Geometric Art 
    Discover real-life examples around the world and those created by other artists
  • Creating a Geometric Art Pattern
    Understanding, tracing and development of your individual pattern
  • Watercolour Technique
    Using colours in the expression of your work
  • Exploring Islimi (Arabesque) Patterns
    The History behind Islimi patterns and their origins, including the inspiration from faith
  • Shading Technique 
    Shading as a tool to bring depth into your work
  • Presentation and Exhibition
    Reflecting on the pieces created and personal application of techniques learnt. Preparing for exhibition: titling, mounting and presenting.

Day 1:

Introduction on Islamic Geometric art including real-life examples around the world along with those created by other artists.

Developing own single pattern, printing and adding colour using watercolours. Encouraging independence in colour choice and pattern style.

Skills gained: Understanding different pattern types, independently tracing a design and confidence in watercolour technique.

Day 2:

Demonstration on how geometric patterns are created and diving into the endless designs and possibilities.

Budding artists will then have the opportunity to create their own pattern and learn about the use of shading techniques to decorate.

Skill gained: Independent pattern creation and  building confidence in using shading.

Day 3:

Introduction on Islimi/Arabesque patterns with the opportunity to create some freehand drawings of a pattern/elements.

Tasked to create a bookmark or A4/A3 drawing freehand, with autonomy to select the colouring medium and develop their own style. 

Skills gained: Freehand confidence development and building autonomy in own work.

Day 4:

Time to develop each piece of work and add own personality and touch. Our artists will now reflect on their experience and what they have learnt including:-  

  • What they learnt about Islamic art
  • How they applied the technique when they created their own piece.
  • Their take home message
  • How they wish to title their pieces to give them personality

Skills gained: Reflective practice and building written skills in personal expression and description.  

Day 5:

Preparing for exhibition and the big day – Our artists will  place the finishing touches on their pieces, mount their artwork and prepare for the exhibition. Students will be given the chance to present their work to their peers and engage with the work across the class. 

Skill developed: Promote confidence and practical skills such as oral presentation and communication. Building social skills including engaging with others work, providing motivation and constructive criticism where appropriate. 

Elham Choaie from Ellustrate

Art Tutor

Elham joins us as our lead tutor for our ONEder Art Academy this year, a mum of two with an academic background in Psychology, Elham has a wealth of experience beyond the creative world. Her past endeavours include working within the health and charity sector for a number of years. Elham made the brave decision to transfer her skills and start her own design agency, working as a branding designer and illustrator for the past 8 years. She has successfully worked on an array of products bringing them to life through her beautiful illustrations, including the Asma+Me Affirmation Cards, which will be used at Camp ONEder this year!

Over the years Elham has volunteered at a number of charitable organisations offering art workshops on Islamic Art for children. Elham has experience of exhibiting her art on a number of occasions and has a special interest in Islamic Art, having furthered her studies with a number of courses focusing on Islamic Art, Geometric Art and Persian Miniature Art at both the Art of Islamic Pattern and The Kings Foundation of Traditional Art.

A large focus of Elham’s work in design has been combining psychology. In addition she has written, illustrated and published an Arabic English bilingual children’s book and is a qualified counsellor (and currently furthering her training in the field of Art Therapy).
