What is Emotional Intelligence?

There are four key principles of emotional intelligence:-

  1. Self-Awareness – Acknowledge and become aware of your emotions
  2. Self-Management and Self-Control – Understanding and managing emotions in a positive way
  3. Empathy – Sensitivity to others’ feelings and concerns, taking their perspective and appreciating the differences in how people feel about things
  4. Social Awareness and Building Relationships

Why is it Important?

By developing these skills, a child’s focus and ability to succeed becomes inevitable. From our experience, too many children are told what to think and their thought process is undermined or not heard. This can affect their confidence in their own thought process and lacking innovative skills for fear of being judged or making mistakes.

Emotional Intelligence also reduces conflicts, for children to be able to communicate effectively with each other and assist one another throughout their lives, whether that be in the classroom or at home with their siblings. We want Our Campers to become independent learners, divergent thinkers and innovators, and understand the importance of learning from their mistakes.

How are we different?

At Camp ONEder, Islam is a way of life and is part of everything we do and teach, this is no different when it comes to the incorporation of emotional intelligence within our programmes.

Our Islamic teachings promote the four key principles of emotional intelligence and so many of the tools that are taught from our faith align with those used in the world of emotional intelligence. These include:-  having a clear intention (Niyyah), practicing patience (Sabr), forgiveness and living in the present with gratitude (Shukr). These tools and many more are embedded within the camp day, relevant to the age and development of Our Campers.

Our intention is to utilise the beautiful names of Allah (SWT) and encourage them to build the skills to embody them, developing their relationship with Allah (SWT) and emotional intelligence at the same time. At Camp ONEder, we believe that by linking the two we are setting our campers up for a healthy and holistic Islamic way of life, on the path to meeting their full potential in this world, and beyond.
